They all know that electric cars are fossil fueled, that children are dying while working in horrible conditions for slave wages in ecologically disastrous mining operations, that once the batteries are depleted the cars are pretty much worthless and that the depleted batteries are yet another environmental disaster.
They know all this while simultaneously patting themselves on the back for subsidizing these horrible vehicles. None of this has ever made sense.
This stems from an incident in Lansing, MI, the state capitol. Government Motors was pimping one of their electric sleds and the woman giving the presentation, when asked where the juice originated from, pointed to a house and an extension cord. Several times. The dude had to say the electricity was coal-derived.
