Hey, too bad there’s no money in that infrastructure bill for actual infrastructure. The San Diego side of the border is empty parkland for several miles in from the beach. Build a deep water facility offshore and a big heavy duty dual use bridge. Run a railroad to just east of the where the highways cross the border, and you can hook up to the existing recently improved heavy duty RR there. This will allow trains of containers to go to Yuma to avoid the CA laws that impact all trucks that aren’t brand new, and perhaps there is less union presence there. From Yuma, either train or truck to the rest of the country.
Yes it will take a few years to build, but that’s called being proactive for the future. This situation didn’t happen overnight, it’s been growing for years. Mexico has a container port a bit south down in Encenada. Don’t know if they can handle more traffic, but they’ve got RR too, and it’s only about 150 miles to Yuma from there by truck.
