Wherever, Whenever,….Whatever

As for who should replace him, anyone who can get a nod from the Senate and will continue to promote what Trump has been doing and I have been honking about since Bush43:
(1) decouple from being the world’s policeman,
(2) get our NATO allies to pull their fair share of the load. 2% isn’t exactly asking for a lot.

Again, we’re fine.
– We are mostly in the Middle East due to strategic inertia and to tidy up problems generally of our own creation. We don’t need their oil anymore.
– While our debt issues are huge, we are in better shape than any other major nation on the planet. When the music stops, the world will groan, but we will hurt less than almost anyone else.
– We feed ourselves.
– Our entire hemisphere is of zero threat to us.
– The only real global challenger we have will be China  and we have absolutely ZERO reason to have a land dispute with them on mainland Asia. Any conflict will – if we are smart about it – be mostly an air and sea conflict for us, with any land force hopefully limited to islands.   Keep reading….

  1. I agree that we can’t continue to be the world’s policeman. That is just the way it is. However, we can’t simply abandon our allies to fend for themselves. What many leftists fail to understand is that by letting our military lose some of it’s operational readiness by lowering the money spent on defense will not necessarily make us weak and in danger of attack by other countries. It will make us no longer able to serve as a deterrent to other nations who might attack our allies, especially those smaller ones that count on us for protection. I am not in any way, shape, or form implying that the author of this piece is a leftist. Just that many on the left can be too dismissive of our role in the world at this period of time.
By continuing to invest in our military, with a eye on the future, we stay strong not just for us, but for the nation’s of Europe, and of the middle East, and even countries as diverse as those in central America and Africa. So while we cannot continue on our path of nation building, and intervention where it is not politically or strategically needed, we can and should project the strength as the only remaining superpower in the world.
Expecting our NATO allies to carry their share of the load is only right, lest they should count on us too much. It is always a good idea when teaming up with another nation to ensure their safety, to make sure that they have some skin in the game, in a manner of speaking. We don’t want weak nations to think that they can get away with taking our advantage of us. And of course, there are some nations that hold a trump card, in that they have the good fortune of having land that is located in a place of importance geographically, whether we need to fly over their airspace unmolested, or even have a permanent footprint there to enable us to react quickly to any crisis that occurs.
Of course, there is a limit as to how much money we can spend on defense, but before cuts are made to that budget, extremely careful and serious consideration must be taken. All too often, when a decision to cut from defense is made, even if it is appropriate, the people doing the cutting tend to go overboard, and then we are faced with shortfalls, and again, the knee jerk reaction happens, and the military starts to encourage members to not re-enlist, so that we have a smaller payroll, at the expense of military readiness, and we get a vicious circle.
