Enjoy Independence Day

Happy 4th everyone!

What does Independence Day stand for? What is it a celebration of? It is NOT a celebration of the country as it exists. It is a celebration of the founding of this country. It is an exultation of the ideals of liberty and an act of veneration toward the men who gave tyranny the middle finger.
Those men risked, quite literally, everything. And they did it for an idea. For a hope. On faith. What they fought for had never been done before. When Patrick Henry declared “Give me liberty or give me death!” no one knew quite what liberty would look like. But they were determined to give it a try. They believed in the ideals of freedom. When our Founding Fathers declared “we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor” they did so not with heavy hearts and trepidation, but with boldness and, dare I say, joy. They were throwing off the yoke of oppression and grabbing their opportunity for a free life.
And by God they won. They succeeded. They were victorious.
Yes, they are likely distraught at what exists. There is much to bemoan, to rail against, to fear even. But not today.
Today, me and mine celebrate. We will eat, we will drink, we will colorfully blow some shit up. We will do so because brave men and women believed in freedom and liberty enough to dare all. They had far less than us, but still they had hope. Still they had faith. No one had shown them what liberty looked like, yet still they fought for it. I honor their memory today with that same hope, with that same faith. We have seen liberty, we have tasted freedom. We have done so because of those men and women and I will honor them and their memory and their sacrifice not in moroseness or anger, but in celebration and hope for the future.
There are 364 days to fret, to yell, to quake, to curse, to fear. Let us spend this day in celebration. In joy. Let us refuse to be cowed by the weight of the possibility of future oppression and instead, let us celebrate the day liberty and courage combined to give us this nation.

A Lesson In Responsibility

Today is the anniversary of the invasion of Normandy, General Eisenhower committed thousands of men to battle to retake Europe from the Nazis. If the worst case scenario were to have happened, General Eisenhower was prepared to take complete and full responsibility for the invasions failure.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower sounded confident before the Normandy Invasion. “This operation is planned as a victory, and that’s the way it’s going to be. We’re going down there, and we’re throwing everything we have into it, and we’re going to make it a success,” he said.

Operation Overlord was a massive campaign—an invasion of 4,000 ships, 11,000 planes, and nearly three million men—that was launched on June 6, 1944. Despite a year of strategizing and a boatload of confidence, Eisenhower had a quiet plan in case his mission failed. If the armada couldn’t cross the English Channel, he’d order a full retreat. One day before the invasion, he prepared a brief statement just in case:

“Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based on the best information available. The troops, the air and the Navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone.”

 

Let that sink in, and compare to the leadership we now have. This man was prepared to shoulder the blame for failure on a global scale.

Obama won’t take blame for anything and credit for everything. The contrast between now and then is stark, and should remind you of why those men are considered “The Greatest Generation” because they were. What we have now is a bunch of selfish people more concerned with their political agenda and lining their own pockets, nary a worry about what they are doing to America and a disrespect for a generation of men who bled and died for love of country.

It has been oft spoken that America will not be destroyed by an invading army, but will eventually be destroyed from within. I fear our best days are behind us, when people like Barack Obama and John Kerry are our current best hope….I weep for our country and am embarrassed for the legacy of the men of D-Day for what we have become.

   I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

In response to the blaring of call to prayer this soldier played the Star Spangled Banner as the flag was raised at his FOB. I love the flag going up behind him at the end. Absolutely bitchin!!
