It’s Been Awhile

It’s Been Awhile

I went skiing for the first time in 30 years….lets just say it didn’t go well, I felt like a 90 year old man learning to ski for the first time, took a hard fall on the last run and wrecked my back. Other than that it was a beautiful day and tons of snow.

I can officially retire from skiing.

  1. skiing is a young man’s game. after 40-50 or so.
it is smarter to sit in the lodge and drink warm
coffee. I did do some skiing back in the 1970’s in Germany. never here in the states.
say you might, but the Aps where great !
and so where the snow bunnies too back then.

      1. it does not get any easier getting older.
I find I wake up around 4am take a pain pill and try to lay back down for a hour or 2 helps a lot.
        pushing the big 70 here.
I have found you can go two way in life.
one) you take care of your body and it takes care of you as you get older. or
        2) you used your body and pay for that mistake the rest of your life. guess what I did ?

Awww. Giving up so early? The slopes still have ALL THAT SNOW!
Spring is here (finally) and the snow has stopped for Easter weekend, but the slopes are still open!
(can’t say as I blame you. as said above, skiing and ‘boarding are a young man’s sport. even though my wife’s uncle (RIP) skiied until well into his 70s-but he did it every year)

  2. That’s when those falls happen no matter what your age. You get near the end of the day, you’re tired, not carving those turns quite as cleanly as you should, maybe get going a bit too fast, next thing you know you catch an edge and wham… yard sale. Just be thankful you were on some western snow, you don’t want to face plant in New England in April.

  3. If you ski all of your life you can do so into old age successfully. I worked at the Hospital in Tahoe for 15 years. Saw plenty of Medicare aged people who still skied. The risk for that age group however is a fall that a 30 year old would ignore can easily put a 70 years old in the hospital requiring surgery. But the old people who did ski were invariably active and in good health. Being active allowed them to ski….skiing allowed them to remain active. One of the realities of aging is if you rest, you rust. Gotta keep moving if you want to be able to move.

  4. I haven’t been on skis in 40 years, wouldn’t put them on if I was paid. Good thoughts to you for a full recovery.

  5. I am from California and tried skiing once in the mountains in the east of Los Angeles Metro area when I was in my late teens and learned quickly that snow was not meant for me.

  6. I haven’t been downhill skiing in close to 40 years, due to a knee injury. My girlfriend got me into cross-country skiing about 20 or so years ago, which is much less bothersome to my knees, but is where I finally managed to break a leg. We kept it up until she couldn’t anymore, and I haven’t been in close to 5 years. Almost went this winter, but, at my age, I’d be more comfortable if I had someone to ski with.

  7. I was talked into trying the slopes at 40 years old by a hot lady.. Half way down i took a fall. I got up and walked away spounting never again. The hot lady muttered the same about me.

  8. right there with you !

i’m still in good enough shape to ski even though past the 40 mark, but its just not worth it to me anymore. putting all the crap on, carrying it to and back from the lift; no thanks !
i’ll still snowmobile and skate outdoors on rinks and lakes; but skiing just isnt worth it.
last month i was in lake tahoe for a week and as many know tahoe had record snow this year, didn’t ski one day. enjoyed the snow but mostly stayed in the casinos.
