What To Do About Ukraine

What To Do About Ukraine

Interesting conversation with the only Russian/Crimean I know, (and I don’t know if “Crimean” is correct), anywho, she told me that the U.S. should just stand down. She said that these conflicts have been going on for generations and most people don’t understand the mixed breed that is Ukraine.

I tend to agree with her. Other than enjoying Obama twist in the wind because he has no idea what you do in these matters, I think we should stay the hell out it.
And this:

At a great distance, it is not hard to cheer for the flag waving irregulars on the streets we see on television. Up close they are not so inspiring. The Germans and Russians are up close. Every German and every Russian has an ancestor who died in the lands we now call Ukraine. Add in the Poles, Czechs, Slovaks and the dog’s breakfast of minor peoples who have been run over by one army or another and you can appreciate the difference in perspective. Consequently, they see all of this through different eyes. This is a game community organizers are wholly unequipped to play.

That’s stating the obvious.

That’s not an argument for or against one side of the ruling class. America is an island nation, as a practical matter. Like the Brits, we will naturally have a different take on world affairs. We should appreciate that by staying the heck out of European politics as much as possible. We will never be as good at the Great Game as the Continentals. There’s no shame in it. They will never be as good at freedom and sea power and a host of other things that come naturally to people insulated from other tribes by oceans. We can win the Great Game by staying out of it.

Beating The Same Drum

Beating The Same Drum

  • ROMNEY: Russia…is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe. They fight every cause for the world’s worst actors.
  • BLITZER: But you think Russia is a bigger foe right now than, let’s say, Iran or China or North Korea? Is that—is that what you’re suggesting, Governor?
  • ROMNEY: Well, I’m saying in terms of a geopolitical opponent, the nation that lines up with the world’s worst actors. Of course, the greatest threat that the world faces is a nuclear Iran. A nuclear North Korea is already troubling enough. But when these—these terrible actors pursue their course in the world and we go to the United Nations looking for ways to stop them, when—when Assad, for instance, is murdering his own people, we go—we go to the United Nations, and who is it that always stands up for the world’s worst actors? It is always Russia, typically with China alongside. And—and so in terms of a geopolitical foe, a nation that’s on the Security Council, that has the heft of the Security Council and is, of course, a—a massive nuclear power, Russia is the—the geopolitical foe.

Obamas Got 99 Problems…

Obamas Got 99 Problems…

…but the Ukraine ain’t one of ’em. Not that he does not want to fix, it’s the how that has him and his minions stymied.

The other bias is against raw IQ. Mass media is most likely the fault here. Using the Big Five personality types, our politicians will all score high on extroversion and agreeableness. These are not the traits common with deep thinkers or people challenging convention. The vast layer just below the waterline, made up of aides, appointed managers and consultants are primarly spear catchers and bomb throwers. These people got to where they are by displaying fierce loyalty and shrewd timing. They knew when to back the winners and when to avoid the losers. None of them are there to rethink anything.

A stable of yes men may make you feel good about yourself, but does little to solve problems.

I’d add that meddling by careerist barnacles like Victoria Nuland is the real problem. The semi-permanent foreign policy bureaucracy has purged itself of anyone not fully in support of empire. That means anyone bright enough to challenge the prevailing policies is hustled out and replaced with a spear catcher. The result is an army of credentialed nitwits backed by the worlds biggest economy and the world’s baddest military. America in the realm of foreign policy is Justin Bierber with a shotgun. read more
